It’s been a few months Google launched the Pixel 3 smartphones. And as we mentioned in our full review of the phone, the phone packs a ton of awesome features, making it almost perfect in every sense.
Google is well aware of that, and it has now decided to advertise those features in a series of commercials dubbed “Unswitchables.” But consider yourself warned because the ads are really, really long. The commercials have been posted on ‘Made by Google’ YouTube channel. Here’s the first one –
The ad campaign mainly focuses on showing why most people have a hard time switching to a new phone. Some say they’re too busy, while others are just too loyal to their existing smartphone brand. Yes, you get the idea. Google is indirectly taking a hit on iOS, and you can even see people switching from an iPhone. The videos, however, never explicitly mentions the iPhone.
All videos are hosted by James Davis, but each one shows a different subject with a different reason for not making the switch yet. Will they switch over to the Pixel 3? Of course they will, because these are all ads.
In the first video, for instance, chef and a small business owner Gladys is “Too Busy To Switch”. So, Davis decides to hand over the phone to her and gives her three weeks to make her decision. The video then shows different situations such as photography, getting things done with the Google Assistant, etc., in which, of course, the Pixel 3 excels.
The video titled, “Unswitchables: Too In Love To Switch” shows the story of Layne who’s having a hard time switching to a new phone as her partner is “too loyal to her brand”. But again, she uses a Pixel 3 for three weeks after which she, you guessed it right, decides to break up with her old phone.
The other two videos, “Unswitchables: Too Chill To Switch”, and “Unswitchables: Too Anxious To Switch” paint a similar picture. As I mentioned earlier, they’re too long but they’re very well produced and fun to watch.

The Indian government is further strengthening its stance on data privacy and wants companies to store user data exclusively in India. Taking another step forward in that direction, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has sent letters to Google and WhatsApp, asking them to clarify their position on the data localization norms when it comes storing payments data collected by their UPI-based payments platforms.
A senior government official told Economic Times that NPCI, in alignment with RBI, wants all payments data to be stored exclusively in India and has made it abundantly clear in its latest missive to Google and WhatsApp.
“Companies say they store payments data in India, but are keeping a mirror copy abroad. India, however, is looking at keeping everything locally”, the government official was quoted as saying by ET. Back in October, WhatsApp revealed that the company has built a system to store all payments data in India to comply with the government’s regulations and pave the way for WhatsApp Payments’ wider rollout.
A month later, Google also decided to abide by the government’s data storage policy and asked for time to build the necessary infrastructure, but just like WhatsApp, Google too did not reveal whether it will store the payments data exclusively in India.
The ‘exclusivity’ condition for storing payments data locally is of prime importance here because WhatsApp recently confirmed that the company shares users’ payments data such as UPI PIN, transaction amount and virtual payments addresses (VPA) with Facebook and third party-party service providers. WhatsApp’s admission was questioned by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
“We are working to increase our data residency capacity in India to support our partners that are regulated by RBI”, a Google spokesperson told EconomicTimes when asked about NPCI’s letter. A WhatsApp spokesperson averted responding to queries regarding NPCI’s letter, but as per a government official, WhatsApp seeks a ‘level playing field’ in India after the company revealed that WhatsApp feels its payments service is being singled out by the government, while its rivals are enjoying an unfair advantage.

HMD Global has launched the Nokia 7.1 in India, and it will go on sale in the country starting December 7. The successor to the Nokia 7 from last year, it has a new and modern design, a superior display, and improved camera hardware thanks to dual Zeiss lenses.
This time around there’s no e-commerce exclusivity for the Nokia 7.1 smartphone and it will be available at mobile retail outlets in India and on Nokia’s online store. The Nokia 7.1 is priced at Rs 19,999.
The Nokia 7.1 follows in the footsteps of the recent Nokia 6.1 Plus and Nokia 5.1 Plus with a glossy glass-sandwich design. The device features a 6000 series aluminum frame, with 84% glass used across the board, which makes the Nokia 7.1 look gorgeous and tempting to pick up.

The Nokia 7.1 includes a 5.84-inch Full-HD+ screen, with a small notch – quite similar to the Nokia 6.1 Plus, but the key highlight here is the introduction of the PureDisplay screen technology. PureDisplay automatically adjusts brightness and contrast to lighting conditions, increase the sunlight visibility, and up-scales non-HDR content to stream HD content from YouTube, as well as Amazon Prime and Netflix.
Unlike the Nokia 8.1, the Nokia 7.1 is powered by the Snapdragon 636 processor, paired with up to 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage.
In the optics department, the device packs a Zeiss-backed dual rear-camera module, which includes a 12MP primary sensor (f/1.8 aperture) and secondary 5MP depth sensor. There’s also an 8MP selfie shooter, which will come in handy for Nokia’s popular Bothie mode. You get many AI features, Pro camera mode, Live Bokeh and many other features.
This device, like every other Nokia-branded smartphone, is part of Google’s Android One program and it runs Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box. It’s, however, disappointing to see as the company has already released Android Pie stable builds and could have launched Nokia 7.1 with the same. The update will land sometime in November, says HMD Global.
There’s also a modest 3,060mAh battery in tow, along with usual connectivity options including a USB Type-C port and 3.5mm headphone jack. You even get a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Airtel prepaid customers on Nokia 7.1 can enjoy 1TB of 4G data on eligible plans starting Rs. 199 and Airtel postpaid customers can enjoy additional data of 120GB along with three months of Netflix subscription and one year of Amazon Prime subscription on plans starting Rs. 499.
Consumers purchasing Nokia 7.1 using HDFC Bank Credit and Debit cards on EMI transactions done through Pinelabs terminals in offline stores will receive a 10% cashback.
A few months ago, some OnePlus 6 users started observing a weird screen flickering issue which was later fixed via an OxygenOS update in August. Now, a few OnePlus 6T users have started to notice a pixel wave on the device’s AMOLED display which appears randomly and vanishes quickly.
Multiple affected users have mentioned on the official OnePlus forum that they see random waves of brightly colored pixels moving across the screen, but so far, the cause of the issue is yet to be determined. In the video below, you can see the OnePlus 6T’s pixel wave display issue near the end of the clip:
Multiple users have pointed out that they see a line of red or green pixels going down from the top to bottom or bottom to top, while a few have reported that they’ve just seen a random cluster of brightly colored pixels on the OnePlus 6T’s display. As of now, it is not clear whether the waves are generated by a software bug or they have something to with the hardware, in which case, getting the device repaired at an authorized OnePlus service center would be the only solution.
After having gone through the entire thread about the issue on the OnePlus forum, it seems a majority of users are seeing the rogue pixels while unlocking the device. Could it be related to the under-display fingerprint scanner? We can’t know for sure yet.
Also, the color of random pixels appearing on the display differs, with some users experiencing brightly colored red and green pixels, while a few others have reported seeing grey, pink or purple pixels. It appears that a factory reset fails to fix the issue either.
OnePlus is yet to issue an official response regarding the OnePlus 6T’s pixel wave problem. We’ve reached out to the OnePlus 6T support team and will update you regarding the OnePlus 6T’s display issue once we get an official response.

The first smartphone powered by MediaTek’s latest chipset, the Helio P70, just made its debut earlier this week but the company is now teasing the unveiling of its next flagship chipset – the Helio P90. It is expected to be made official at a launch event in Shenzhen, China on December 13.
Though it’s too soon for MediaTek to be launching another flagship-grade chipset for mid-range devices, the company has taken to Twitter to tease the launch of its upcoming Helio P90 chipset, which it says will be powerful, efficient and feature “groundbreaking AI” applications.

The teaser falls in line with recent rumors and sightings of Helio P80’s benchmark scores (which were only a tad bit behind the upcoming Snapdragon 8150 chipset), however, it’s interesting to see the company jump straight to P90 and totally skip the P80 moniker.
TL Lee, MediaTek’s General Manager of Wireless Communication, told 91mobiles that the chip maker is taking a step up in the naming classification to show off that Helio P90 is not just an iterative upgrade and that it’s significantly better than their Helio P70 SoC that was unveiled earlier in October this year.
Lee further confirmed that the Helio P90 chipset will be unveiled on December 13 at an event in China. The chipset will soon become available to OEMs for testing after the launch, however, devices powered by the same won’t make it to the market until later in 2019.
MediaTek expects the first batch of devices backed by the Helio P90 chipset to find their way to the market in the second quarter of 2019. Maybe the Realme U2 could be the first phone to be powered by this chipset, wouldn’t that be awesome? The rumor mill also hints that the Oppo R19 could be the first phone with the chipset.
As internet connections get faster and affordable, cloud storages are rapidly replacing physical storage drives. Apart from its benefits of mobility and access from many different devices – even simultaneously, online storage is almost becoming a necessity with major services like WhatsApp using it to back up yout data.
If you’re a Google user, you already get 15GB of free storage via Google Drive. But there’s a high chance that you might be already running out of available space, especially if you’re tied apps like Google Photos, Docs, Keep Notes etc. To solve this, Google recently began offering paid Drive storage, just like iCloud, to consumers under the banner of Google One.

Besides these paid benefits, Google also appears to be offering the basic plan to many of its patrons. As a reward to its cherished contributors under the Local Guide program, it is offering 100GB of Google One storage for free for a period of six months. This stoarge can be utilized for services such as Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Further, it can be shared with 5 other Google users.
Not only is this a good tactic to promote Local Guide rewards program, it should also attract more users to Google One. Once they cross the threshold of complimentary 15GB, users are more likely to pay for the subscription once the free trial of six months expires instead of freeing up space by willingly letting go of important files.

If you haven’t been keeping up with the latest in tech, of recent, then you may not know that Realme and Xiaomi recently hiked the price for some of its popular smartphones to compensate for the depreciation in rupee value against the dollar, which has fallen since mid-2018 and has now settled around Rs 69-70 per dollar.
Well, it certainly startled buyers as they expected other phone makers to follow suit but Asus has today taken a tough stand and revealed it will not hike the price of its ZenFone devices in India.
Yes, the Taiwanese giant is looking to further the rivalry (with Xiaomi in the budget and OnePlus in the budget flagship segment) and has decided to bear the brunt of losses and not ramp up the price of its devices. At its peak, the rupee crisis had taken the value to Rs 74 per dollar, which affected Xiaomi and others resulting in the price hike.
In an official statement, Dinesh Sharma, Head of Mobile Business at ASUS India, said, “We’re (Asus) committed to the Indian market and thrive to keep our fans happy. Despite the ongoing rupee-dollar race, we have decided to absorb the cost currently and give our fans a better value proposition. We are glad to announce that none of our ZenFones will see an increase in price.”
This is especially great news for prospective buyers who had been looking to buy a new smartphone. Asus has adopted a strategy different from Xiaomi, who has increased the price of its budget smartphones and Mi TVs while slashing the price of its popular Mi A2, and Redmi Note 5 Pro smartphones.
As for what this means for Asus fans, you can still buy your favorite Asus ZenFone devices, including the recently launched ZenFone Lite L1, ZenFone Max M1 and popular ZenFone 5Z, ZenFone Max Pro M1 at the price they’re currently selling for online or offline.
Pixel 3 might be a rather dull flagship unless you’re looking for an astonishing camera experience out of a smartphone. But something really interesting is the Pixel Stand or a wireless charging dock especially designed to add functionality of a Smart Display like the Google Home Hub while the phone is charging, which was announced at the same event.
While charging the Pixel 3 on the Pixel Stand, the phone automatically enters a special mode with direct shortcuts to Google Assistant routines, which change with the time of the day. For instance, plop a Pixel 3 on the Pixel Stand and it will tell you how your day looks like, providing information like weather, ETA to your workplace, meetings and engagements.
At night, the Pixel Stand helps you settle down, by setting an alarm for you, playing soothing white noise tracks or nature sounds to make falling asleep easier, and also letting you turn off smart lights, if you’re using any. In the morning, it gradually increases the phone’s brightness a few minutes before the alarm is supposed to go off. All of this makes the Pixel Stand an ideal accessory for your nightstand, office desk, living room, or even kitchen.
Most of these actions can be performed just by talking to the Google Assistant, without a need to touch the phone. When the phone is charging but not in use, the Pixel Stand also acts like a photo frame and you can select the albums that you want images to be displayed from.
All of these additional features – besides the liberty of constantly switching between charging and using the phone that wireless charging offers – make the Pixel Stand really desirable. It even charges other phones which are certified for Qi-standard wireless charging, like the iPhone XS (or iPhone X) and the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 etc – although the charging is relatively slower at 5W compared to 10W for the Pixel 3.
Pixel Stand is, thus, entitled to be called one of the most useful accessories for the Pixel 3 – not to forget that its minimal design allows it to blend with any background pretty easily. However, if you’re planning to buy the Pixel Stand ($79) for your new Pixel smartphone, you need to take a note of what I’m going to tell you next.
The Pixel Stand only works when you’re using the official 18W USB-C charger bundled in the box, or the one you get with the Pixel 3. While testing, it didn’t work with any other USB-C charger or cable I tried – including the ones supplied by Huawei, OnePlus, Poco, all rated at 18W or above. Using my MacBook Pro’s USB-C charger was not of any use either.
Instead of the usual white indicator light, the LED at the base glows in reddish amber hue to inform you of the incompatibility. Surprisingly, the Pixel Stand works when I connect it to my MacBook using the USB-C to USB-C cables (both Apple’s and Google’s). Upon investigating further, I found that it works with all laptops using the included cable (irrespective of Thunderbolt 3 support) but it doesn’t work with any USB Type-A to USB-C cables. While pinning the exact reason down is difficult, it appears that the Pixel Stand only support Type-C to Type-C cables, which is strange indeed.
What this means is that if you’re traveling and planning to take the Pixel Stand with you, you’ll be obligated to carry the official charger. Put otherwise – if you do not carry the official charger, you might not be able to use the Pixel Stand and enjoy all the great features it offers. Further, if you lose or break the official charger, you’ll have no other option but to buy the official charger, or swap it for the one you get with the Pixel 3, if you have that.
This is another example of how Google is trying to lock consumers to its hardware ecosystem and this, as some might argue, is simply aping Apple. Likewise, you must use the official USB-C charger to be able to charge the Pixel 3 at the fastest possible rate and using any other charger will charge the phone slowly.
Google is also making sure that you’re wary of that and it does so by informing you if the device is charging “rapidly” or “slowly”, the latter when you’re using a third-party wireless charger. Thus, Google like Apple is making users fearful of losing or breaking their chargers which Apple users constantly rile about.
While not very disheartening entirely, the step is somewhat upsetting for a hardcore Android fan like me who prefers it for the freedom and liberty it offers. Thus, I feel that while Pixel Stand is a great accessory to have, Android fans might feel out of place, even while witnessing what is supposed to be the most refined Android experience.
Fastrack has launched the Reflex Wav, a new device in the company’s wearable line-up which is claimed to be the world’s slimmest smart band that has support for gestures to accomplish tasks such as controlling music playback, attending calls and checking notifications among others. The Reflex Wav smart band has been priced at Rs. 4,995 and is already up for orders from Fastrack’s official website.
The Reflex Wav is just 9mm thin and comes with a charcoal black band which has a dotted pattern on the inner surface to offer maximum comfort.
The new wearable device from Fastrack comes with an IP67 rating for protection against occasional splashes and dust, while the inbuilt sensors allow the device to monitor parameters such as steps walked and calories burnt during a workout. 24-hour active sleep tracking and automatic weather updates are also on board.
As for the Reflex Wav’s gesture support, well, they can be customized to perform a wide array of tasks. For example, users can twist their wrist to control music playback, click photos using their smartphone’s camera or mute an incoming call.
Users can get notifications from a wide range of apps which can be selected using the companion Reflex Wav app for Android and iOS. The device also sends vibration alerts to remind users of an event on their calendar or simply wake them up. There’s also a second-city time feature. The Reflex Wav is powered by a Qualcomm processor and is claimed to provide a battery life of up to 5 days on a single charge.

Earlier this month, Nikkei reported that due to lackluster sales of the iPhone XR, Apple has ordered Foxconn to cut down the production of the device by 25%. Apple’s VP of Product Design, Greg Joswiak, has now laid to rest the worries around the iPhone XR’s sales performance and has told Reuters that the iPhone XR is currently the company’s ‘most mainstream product and our most popular iPhone’.
The iPhone XR’s market availability was delayed due to some production issues, but analysts predicted that the cheapest member of the 2018 iPhone family will be the top-seller, something which has now been confirmed by Joswiak.
Since the iPhone XR became available, it’s been the best-selling iPhone each and every day that it’s been on sale.
The Apple executive told a similar story about the iPhone XR’s market reception to CNET and revealed that the device has ‘been our most popular iPhone each and every day since the day it became available’.
Apple reportedly shipped around 9 million units of the iPhone XR in its first weekend, but that number still fell short of analysts’ estimates who expected the relatively affordable iPhone XR’s mass appeal to be a catalyst for some record-breaking sales figures. As for the production cutback, Foxconn reportedly reduced the number of assembly lines dedicated to the iPhone XR from 60 to 45 following Apple’s order.
Another report from TheWallStreetJournal published earlier this month cited internal sources who revealed that Apple has slashed the production orders for the iPhone XS, XS Max and the iPhone XR in the wake of weak sales, something which Apple’s component suppliers and manufacturing partners are not all too happy about.
At the company’s previous earnings call, Apple dropped the bombshell that it will no longer reveal the number of devices sold on a quarterly basis, which led many analysts to believe that Apple’s new move is a bid to mask the lower-than-expected sale of the 2018 iPhone models. Joswiak comments will certainly give some peace of mind to Apple investors who were worried about the fall in Apple’s shares after the earnings call.
With just a couple of days left before December kicks off, Sony and Xbox have announced the free titles for the upcoming month that come as a perk with their premium gaming subscription service.
Sony has revealed the list of free PlayStation Plus titles for December which includes six games while the Xbox Live Gold subscribers will get to enjoy four games absolutely free for a limited time.
The December edition of free titles for Xbox Live Gold subscribers includes two Xbox One games and an equal number of Xbox 360 titles which are also playable on the Xbox One.
Q.U.B.E. 2: The physics-based puzzle video game, which is normally priced at $24.99, will be free to play for Xbox Live Gold subscribers between December 1 and December 31.
Never Alone: The puzzle-platformer adventure game carries a price tag of $14.99, but can be played for free from December 16 to January 15.
Dragon Age II: The critically-acclaimed RPG, that will normally set you back by $19.99, will be playable for free between December 1 and December 15. The game is also compatible with the Xbox One.
Mercenaries- Playground of Destruction: Priced at $9.99, the action-adventure game is known for its impressive graphics and just like Dragon Age II, it can also be played on the Xbox 360 as well as the Xbox One. Mercenaries- Playground of Destruction will be free to play from December 16 to December 31.
Sony’s free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers includes six titles, with two each for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Vita.
All the games for PlayStation consoles listed above will be free to play between December 4 and January 1 for gamers with an active PlayStation Plus subscribers.
The Asia-Pacific region has huge potential to write the next growth story for Amazon Web Services (AWS), with India playing a key role in Cloud adoption among both enterprises and the governments, CEO Andy Jassy has stressed.
After delivering his marathon three-hour keynote address at the AWS “ReInvent 2018” conference attended by over 50,000 people here, Jassy told reporters that he is very bullish on India.
“The business in the Asia-Pacific region is very broad and is growing very quickly. The business is growing rapidly in China, India, Singapore, Australia and South-East Asian countries,” Jassy said during a press conference.
According to him, these are still early days in Asia-Pacific as businesses have begun picking up on Cloud adoption, albeit slowly.
“We registered $27 billion in revenue and 46 per cent growth (year-on-year) globally but I would say we are still in early days — even in the US market that took the lead in Cloud adoption,” Jassy noted.
Retail giant Amazon’s Cloud arm AWS is an undisputed Public Cloud leader with 51.8 per cent share in Cloud infrastructure market globally, followed by Microsoft at 13.3 per cent and Alibaba at a distant 4.6 per cent.
In India, Amazon Internet Services Pvt Ltd (AISPL) is a subsidiary of the Amazon Group which undertakes the resale and marketing of AWS Cloud services in the country.
The company which launched AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region with two availability zones in 2016 has seen stupendous growth in adding new customers in the region.
When it comes to public sector in India, the state governments are quickly shifting their workloads to the AWS platform – even faster than the US state governments, said Teresa Carlson, Vice President, Worldwide Public Sector at AWS.
According to her, in just about two years’ time, there has been a significant change on Cloud adoption in the public sector in India.
“I met several stakeholders, including ministers, in India in September this year and realized state governments are very positive and keen towards Cloud adoption. The country is leaning towards Cloud computing, along with skilling its young and tech-savvy population, for a true digital transformation,” Carlson told IANS in an interaction.
India is on the right trajectory, said Carlson, as the state governments now have quick access to buying Cloud capabilities.
“We will have Public Sector Summit in New Delhi next year and I am looking forward to explore the India market further,” she added.
Facebook has started expanding its “Today In” section for local news and community information to make it easier for people to find news and information from their local towns and cities.
“It is now available in over 400 cities in the US, and we have launched our first international test in Australia,” Anthea Watson Strong, Product Manager for Local News and Community Information at Facebook said in a statement on Wednesday.
Facebook said it wants to expand the “Today In” section more broadly soon.
“In addition, we have started testing Today In in communities located in news deserts, places that have low supply of local news and community information, by supplementing with relevant content from surrounding areas,” Strong said.
Today In aggregates local news and community information in a separate section within the Facebook app.
People who live in a city where Today In is currently available can visit this section directly, and they can choose to turn on local updates to start seeing a collection of local news more regularly in their News Feed.
Facebook started testing Today In earlier this year after doing a research in which it found that over 50 per cent of people said they wanted to see more local news and community information on Facebook — more than any other type of content they were asked about.
The research showed that people wanted both what might be traditionally understood as local news — breaking news or information about past events like city council meetings, crime reports and weather updates — as well as community information that could help them make plans, like bus schedules, road closures and restaurant openings.
“In addition to expanding the availability of Today In, we’re running a test with over 100 local government and first responder Pages to help them communicate time-sensitive and need-to-know information to people on Facebook,” Strong said.
“The local alert label appears in News Feed and Today In, and we are also testing notifications, which participating Pages can target to people who live in the affected areas,” Strong added.
After a bit of delay against its promised arrival timeline in India, Asus has today launched the highly-anticipated ROG Phone. The beastly gaming smartphone from ASUS has been priced at Rs. 69,999, and will go on sale from today on Flipkart.
